Gilbert owes it start to William Gilbert who provided land to the railroad for a rail line connection Phoenix and Florence. Ayer’s Grocery Store was the first store to open in Gilbert in 1910 and was also the local post office. Incorporated in 1920 Gilbert was as farming community and was known as the “Hay Capital of the World”
